The Designer
I'll write down something that had been stuck in my mind almost the whole day today.
Today was one of the most memorable first day of school. I don't know why. At first I thought today was gonna be the worst first day of school ever. The teacher didn't have enough diaries to give out to me, lost my timetable when the classes hasn't even started, forgot I was one of the girls in the first cleaning duty and so on. But in the end, I felt that it was actually pretty good!
I had my first VisCom and Art classes today. Both were taught by the same goofy teacher. He said some stuff that actually appealed to me. He said something about the difference between the artist and a designer. The artist has more control on their work. They can do whatever they want to express their emotions and messages to the society. On the other hand, a designer, is commonly being hired to do stuff. Their work are not as free or as expressive as the artist's work. Their work is done according to the client. There is someone controlling over their talent.
A fantastic painting are always followed by their artist's name. For example, "Monalisa" by Leonardo DaVinci. Artists are recognized for their works. People can sometimes identify the artists of certain paintings for their distinct style and approach.
What about a designer? Is a really good design can actually be recognized by people? Take the Nike example. The tick. Who created the tick? Does anyone actually knows? What about the McDonald's 'M'? They're all famous logos. People recognized them. But does anyone ever knows who came up with them? Probably a very very good designer that get paid millions for the logo. But then, those people would be called 'The' designer. A fantastic designer who is successful can probably be recognized by people like an artist.
I always thought of myself as an artist, but my dream job is to be a designer. I am well informed on how different those two are. But I haven't really thought about my job. What if my client wants me to do something that I don't like? I won't be able to reach my full potential and I won't be able to be the best designer. They won't like my stuff. But I have to do it. I have to be able to fulfill their request.
It made me think. I want to be the designer. A designer so good that I can actually work with anyone, despite our different interests.
The designer.
Now that's what I wanna be in the future.
The designer.
